Atizapán multi-homicide: Suspects detained in death of Camilo Séptimo musician

Two suspects, Diego Sebastián “N” and Gerardo “N”, remain in pretrial detention at the Barrientos prison following the multi-homicide of Jonathan Meléndez, a musician and founder of the band Camilo Séptimo, in Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico.

The victims included Meléndez, his pregnant wife Ana Paula Barragán, their three-year-old daughter Sofía, and domestic worker Aleyda Romero. Authorities also noted the death of the family's pet. The suspects face charges of qualified homicide, interruption of pregnancy, and animal cruelty.

Investigators believe the motive was the theft of a hardware wallet containing millions of dollars in Bitcoin. Evidence presented by the State of Mexico Prosecutor's Office includes security footage, witness testimony, and items found in a getaway vehicle, such as gloves and adhesive tape. One suspect allegedly attempted to bribe police with 1.5 million pesos during his arrest.

A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, to determine if the suspects will be formally charged, following a defense request to extend the constitutional term for evidence gathering.
