Atizapán de Zaragoza multi-homicide investigation

Overview

On September 1, 2026, a quadruple homicide occurred in a residential complex in Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico, targeting the family of Jonathan Meléndez Ochoa, a founding member and keyboardist of the synth-pop band Camilo Séptimo. The victims included Meléndez, his wife Ana Paola, who was four months pregnant, their three-year-old daughter, and a 21-year-old domestic worker, Aleyda Romero. The family dog was also killed. The victims' six-year-old son survived by hiding.

Authorities have arrested two suspects: Diego Sebastián Rosen Ferlini, a real estate business partner of Meléndez, and his driver, Gerardo “N”. Investigators believe the motive was the theft of cryptocurrency, as suspects reportedly targeted a ‘cold box’ or hardware wallet containing millions of dollars in Bitcoin. Evidence recovered from a getaway vehicle included a safe, gloves, adhesive tape, and zip ties used to restrain the victims.

As of September 6, the suspects remain in pretrial detention at the Barrientos prison. During the initial hearing, prosecutors presented approximately 70 pieces of evidence, including security footage, expert reports, and witness testimony. The suspects face multiple charges, including qualified homicide, interruption of pregnancy, homicide of a minor and woman, and cruelty against animals. Notably, one suspect allegedly attempted to bribe police with 1.5 million pesos during his arrest. The defense requested an extension of the constitutional term from 72 to 144 hours to gather evidence, a request the judge granted. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for September 9 to determine if the suspects will be formally linked to the criminal process.
