Mexico to digitalize health system to improve medicine supply

President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a plan to modernize and digitalize Mexico's public health system, starting with IMSS-Bienestar. The initiative aims to eliminate manual paperwork and physical memos that currently delay the distribution of medicines and medical supplies.

To achieve full traceability from suppliers to patients, the government will recruit young Mexican specialists in data science, logistics, and operations research, including graduates from the National Polytechnic Institute and the Technological Institute of Mexico. The goal is to create automated warehouses and digital tracking systems to ensure supplies reach hospitals efficiently.

In addition to this digital overhaul, the administration is expanding physical healthcare infrastructure. This includes the rehabilitation of the General Hospital in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, which increased its capacity from 62 to 94 beds, and the planned installation of 905 new health clinics across 125 municipalities in the State of Mexico by 2027.
