Oaxaca historic centre traffic reordering faces mixed reactions from locals and taxi drivers

Neighbourhood groups and merchants in Oaxaca’s historic centre welcomed recent traffic‑reordering measures, saying they improve mobility, safety and preserve public space. Representatives such as Janet Medina of the “20 de Noviembre” security committee and Mario Torres of “Vecinos por la Paz” highlighted years of congestion caused by out‑of‑town taxis and tourist buses and praised the new rules for restoring order.

Meanwhile, foreign‑registered taxi drivers staged protests against the same traffic changes, demanding that authorities reconsider restrictions that affect their operations. The demonstrators argue that the measures limit their ability to serve passengers and threaten their livelihoods, creating tension between the taxi sector and local authorities over the new mobility policy.
