Mexico to conduct National Earthquake Drill on September 19

Mexico will conduct its Second National Drill on September 19 to strengthen emergency prevention and response protocols. The exercise involves various hypothetical earthquake scenarios across different regions of the country.

In Tlaxcala, the drill will simulate an earthquake with an epicenter in Tehuacán, Puebla. State Civil Protection officials aim to evaluate the reaction capacity of public institutions, businesses, and citizens to identify potential improvements in emergency response.

In Sonora, the drill will simulate a 7.1 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter located 26 kilometers southeast of Mexicali, Baja California. The exercise in the Northwest Zone—which includes Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Sonora, and Sinaloa—is scheduled for 11:00 AM local time. Authorities are encouraging families to participate from their homes and develop personal civil protection plans, which include identifying risks and designing evacuation routes.
