Mexico to establish 12,750 new primary care clinics under Universal Health Service
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has signed a decree to establish 12,750 new primary care clinics as part of Mexico’s Universal Health Service. This expansion, set to begin operations in January 2027, will target 24 states within the IMSS-Bienestar system. The network aims to increase medical capacity by providing over 40 million consultations annually. The new clinics will be distributed between rural areas (7,111) and urban areas (5,639), offering up to 90 types of free medications.
To facilitate the rollout, the government will form Health Committees for Wellbeing to assist in clinic adaptation, a process similar to the ‘La Clínica es Nuestra’ program. Recruitment for medical and nursing staff will open on September 14, 2026, and run through October 31.
Additionally, the government is expanding the ‘Farmacias del Bienestar’ program, which will establish approximately 6,567 points across the 24 states to improve medicine supply. The ‘Salud Casa por Casa’ program, which provides home medical visits for seniors and people with disabilities, has already conducted nearly 25 million consultations since its launch in June 2025, utilizing 20,000 health professionals.
