Mexico to Issue Environmental Decree Protecting Mahahual in Costa Maya

Mexico's federal government, through the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), will issue a special environmental decree for Mahahual on the Costa Maya. The decree aims to regulate growth, prioritize ecotourism projects and safeguard mangroves, reefs and surrounding forests. State Governor Mara Lezama and President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a 197.5 million‑peso investment to improve roads, the waterfront promenade and public infrastructure in Mahahual, linking the measure to broader initiatives such as Mexico Circular and a sargassum‑based economy.

The decree will be drafted jointly with state authorities, tourism agencies and local communities. In the same briefing, activists from Sinaloa protested the planned ammonia, methanol and urea plant in Topolobampo, demanding that the German‑linked project be halted over concerns for mangrove loss and fisheries.

Both actions reflect a push for sustainable development in coastal regions while addressing local environmental concerns.
