Mexico to negotiate with US over proposed forced‑labor tariffs on its exports

The United States announced a possible additional tariff on imports from 60 economies for alleged forced‑labor practices. Mexico’s Economy Ministry said that roughly 85 % of its exports to the United States—covering most goods that meet USMCA rules of origin, as well as automobiles, steel and aluminium already subject to Section 232 duties—will remain exempt.

For the remaining 15 % of Mexican shipments, the ministry will enter formal talks with the U.S. Trade Representative over the next 45 days, presenting evidence of actions taken to combat forced labour. The discussions will occur alongside a broader U.S. review of trade rules, and Mexico hopes the negotiations will prevent the new tariff from being applied.

The announcement also mentioned a 25 % levy on Brazilian goods, but Mexico’s focus is on averting the forced‑labour surcharge on its own trade with the United States.
