Mexico to restrict cell phone use in primary and secondary schools
The Mexican Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) is set to implement a restriction on the use of cell phones and electronic devices in primary and secondary schools starting November 3. In Baja California Sur, the SEP will hold informative assemblies between October 19 and October 28 in various municipalities, including La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, and Loreto, to brief school directors and parent associations on the decision.
The policy aims to address the impact of digital platforms on student behavior, socialization, and learning. While the ban applies to basic education, its application in upper secondary education will be partial, and it will not affect higher education levels.
A study by México Evalúa and the Tecnológico de Monterrey highlights the complexities of this policy. Research suggests that restricting cell phone use during class can improve learning, particularly for lower-performing students. However, experts warn that a general restriction could widen digital gaps for students who rely on mobile devices as their primary technological tools, especially in schools lacking connectivity.
