Mexico transport reform proposed amid security technology gaps

Mexican legislators are proposing comprehensive reforms to the Federal Roads, Bridges, and Motor Transport Law and the Federal Labor Law. Deputy Margarita García García emphasized the need for a new legal framework to provide certainty to concessionaires, improve labor conditions for drivers, and ensure efficient, affordable passenger transport.

In a related challenge to transport safety, data from Morelos indicates a significant technological gap in the taxi sector. Only 2 percent of the 9,000 taxis operating in the metropolitan area are equipped with surveillance cameras and GPS systems connected to the C5 coordination center.

While the Coalición del Transporte Público en Morelos noted that financing is available for security upgrades, many concessionaires resist the investment. The lack of technology, which includes panic buttons and real-time monitoring, limits nighttime service due to crime risks and prevents local drivers from competing with digital platforms like Uber or DiDi.
