Mexico unveils Olinia Uno, its first domestic electric vehicle

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has unveiled the Olinia Uno, the country’s first domestically developed electric vehicle. Designed to foster a local electric vehicle industry, the vehicle is intended to be an affordable option for urban and rural commuters.

Developed by the National Institute of Technology of Mexico (TecNM), the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), and research centers under the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technologies and Innovation (SECIHTI) with support from the Chinese Embassy, the Olinia Uno features a modest technical specification. It is equipped with a 13 kW (18 hp) electric motor, a 14.7 kWh LFP battery, and a maximum speed of 50 km/h. The vehicle offers a range of approximately 100 to 125 km on a single charge and can be charged via standard household outlets.

The six-passenger vehicle is designed with a boxy, space-efficient layout similar to Japanese kei-cars and is capable of accommodating a wheelchair. Production is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027, with an expected starting price of approximately 150,000 pesos (roughly $8,600 USD).
