Mexico domestic electric vehicle development
Overview
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum introduced the Olinia Uno, the nation’s first domestically developed electric vehicle. Developed through a collaboration between the National Institute of Technology of Mexico, the National Polytechnic Institute, and various research centers under the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technologies and Innovation (SECIHTI), the vehicle is designed to be an affordable option for commuters. Supported by the Chinese Embassy, the six-passenger model features a 13 kW motor, a 14.7 kWh LFP battery, and a range of approximately 100 to 125 km. It is designed with a space-efficient layout similar to Japanese kei-cars and can accommodate a wheelchair. Production is slated to begin in the summer of 2027, with an expected starting price of approximately 150,000 pesos. The project has since expanded to include the Olinia Carga, a compact electric cargo vehicle aimed at supporting small businesses through ‘minielectromobility’. Developed by approximately 70 specialists from public higher education institutions, including UNAM and IPN, the vehicle features a payload capacity of up to 650 kg, a range exceeding 120 km, and a maximum speed of 120 km/h. It is designed for urban settings and can be recharged using standard electrical outlets. To facilitate industrialization, SECIHTI and Nacional Financiera (Nafin) plan to launch a public tender in late September 2026 to select Mexican and international commercial and industrial partners. Registration for the tender is expected in October, with the investment round closing in December 2026. Nafin will coordinate with SECIHTI to facilitate financing for micro and small entrepreneurs. The Olinia project also includes other models, such as the Olinia 1 for passengers and the Olinia Van for protected cargo, all sharing a common architecture. Project director Roberto Capuano Tripp stated the Olinia Carga is expected to go on sale by late 2027.
