Mexico vehicle production dips slightly as exports rise and heavy‑truck sales surge in May 2026

In May 2026 Mexico produced 342,926 light vehicles, a 3.7% decline from May 2025. Cumulative production from January to May reached 1,642,083 units, the fourth‑best period on record and a 0.1% increase over the same span in 2025. Light‑vehicle exports rose 1.7% to 306,288 units, bringing the January‑May export total to 1,388,236 units, up 4% year‑on‑year. Chrysler accounted for 37% of production, Volkswagen 34% and Audi 23.1%; SUVs made up 48% of output. The main export destinations were the United States, Canada, El Salvador, Germany and Brazil.

Wholesale sales of heavy trucks (both cargo and passenger) grew 20.1% to 2,841 units, marking a third consecutive monthly rise. At the same time, retail sales fell 15.6%, production slipped 0.6% and exports dropped 8.5%. The United States absorbed 92.4% of Mexico’s heavy‑vehicle exports. Mercedes‑Benz bus retail sales fell 30.6% to 136 units, while its wholesale bus sales rose 17.3% to 156 units, and Mercedes‑Benz heavy‑vehicle production declined 41.2% to 130 units.
