Mexico monsoon causes severe flooding in Sonora and Yucatán

Heavy rainfall and atmospheric instability, driven by the Mexican monsoon, have caused significant flooding and infrastructure damage across several regions in Mexico. In the state of Sonora, Empalme was severely impacted, recording up to 164.1 mm of rainfall. This led to the activation of the Plan Marina by the Mexican Navy to assist residents, the opening of temporary shelters at the Teatro Ferrocarrilero, and reports of at least 13 affected homes. In Guaymas, rainfall reached 90 mm, causing flooding and downed utility poles.

In Hermosillo, the community of Miguel Alemán recorded 60 mm of rain, prompting municipal authorities to deploy heavy machinery to clear water from residential areas and use drones for aerial supervision. Other parts of the country, including the Yucatán Peninsula, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, are facing continued threats of intense storms, electrical activity, and high winds due to low-pressure systems and tropical waves.

Authorities in various states, including Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa, have issued alerts for potential flash floods and rising river levels, urging citizens to avoid crossing flooded roads or arroyos.
