Mexico weather: Monsoon and tropical wave trigger widespread rain and hail

Mexico is experiencing widespread weather instability driven by the Mexican monsoon and tropical wave number 39. This has resulted in heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and significant flooding across various regions.

In the State of Mexico, intense hailstorms have covered streets in Teoloyucan, Zumpango, and Cuautitlán Izcalli with thick layers of ice. In the metropolitan area, strong currents in Ecatepec and Tlalnepantla have swept away vehicles. Mexico City boroughs have also been placed under a Yellow Alert due to the risk of heavy rain and hail.

In Baja California Sur, heavy rains have led to the closure of schools in Los Cabos and disruptions in urban arroyos. Meanwhile, in Morelos, authorities have identified 96 critical points at high risk of flooding. Other regions, including Sonora, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa, are facing a combination of intense precipitation and heatwaves.

In Mexicali, a thermal turnover phenomenon in the lagoons is being monitored, as it may reduce oxygen levels and cause fish mortality. Additionally, the National Meteorological Service has forecasted 56 cold fronts for the upcoming season, with three expected to arrive in September.
