Mexico's Morena imposes anti-nepotism rule as legislators seek licenses for 2027 governor races

President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the licenses requested by Morena legislators to run in the party’s internal selection for the 2027 gubernatorial elections do not guarantee a candidacy. The party must still review each applicant’s profile, background and compliance with its requirements before confirming who will contest the 17 governor seats.

The National Electoral Commission, led by Citlalli Hernández Mora, reiterated Morena’s new anti‑nepotism rule that bars relatives of incumbent governors from running. Registration of aspirants will take place from 22 to 27 June at the World Trade Center in Mexico City, with a daily schedule for each state. Prominent figures mentioned include Senator Félix Salgado Macedonio, Senator Ruth González and others whose eligibility will be examined under the anti‑nepotism and integrity standards.
