Mexico's August Mushroom Festivals Attract Thousands in Michoacán and State of Mexico

The Fungi Fest will take place on August 1‑2 at the Colegio de Morelia in Michoacán, with an expected 1,500‑2,000 visitors. Organized by the state tourism secretariat, the event will showcase around 300 edible mushroom species, feature more than 50 local producers, chefs and entrepreneurs, and offer tastings, cooking workshops, conferences on micology, live music and artistic performances.

In the State of Mexico, the Festival del Hongo in San Pedro Nexapa, Amecameca, is also scheduled for August 1‑2. The free‑entry celebration highlights the region’s forested environment at the foothills of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, offering dishes made from wild‑collected mushrooms, artisanal crafts, a cycling tour, cultural workshops, and concerts by groups such as Grupo Niche, Perro Callejero and percussionist Paty Piñón. Both festivals aim to boost alternative tourism, support local mushroom gatherers—predominantly women—and generate economic benefits for dozens of families.
