Mexico's avocado exports to the US rise 35% in early 2026
The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture reported that avocado shipments to the United States grew 35% in the first four months of 2026, reaching 501,824 tonnes compared with 370,551 tonnes in the same period of 2025. March 2026 alone saw 148,511 tonnes exported, a 57% increase over March 2025. Despite the volume surge, export earnings fell sharply: value dropped 22% in the first quarter and about 29% in April as international prices fell and the peso strengthened. The wholesale price of Hass avocados for the U.S. market fell to roughly $1 per pound in April. Mexico’s share of the U.S. avocado market slipped from 95% to 70% by May, as competitors from Peru, Colombia and Chile gained ground. In 2025, Mexican avocado exports to the United States generated $3.653 billion, accounting for 8.1% of the country’s agri‑food exports to that market. Officials highlighted the sector’s importance for the economies of Michoacán, Jalisco, the State of Mexico and Nayarit and noted ongoing policy discussions such as the new National Water Law.
