Mexico's biometric CURP may become essential for digital services
The implementation of the biometric CURP (Clave Única de Registro de Población) in Mexico, which began in July 2025, remains a voluntary and gradual process. While citizens are not legally forced to include biometric data such as photographs and fingerprints, the practical necessity of this identification may increase due to upcoming digital infrastructure changes.
Under the proposed Digital Economy Law, financial institutions may be permitted to validate identities remotely using the Digital CURP or the Citizen Digital File. This would allow users to open savings accounts, credit lines, or insurance policies via mobile devices or computers without visiting a physical branch.
Legal experts note that while the registration is technically voluntary, it could function as a de facto requirement. As more digital services and financial transactions depend on the digital infrastructure linked to biometric data, those without it may find themselves excluded from essential online procedures.
