Mexico's 'Capitán Sol' linked to fiscal fuel theft and money laundering
The Mexican Attorney General's Office (FGR) has linked Miguel Ángel “N”, known as “Capitán Sol,” to a fiscal fuel theft (huachicol) and money laundering network. Investigations reveal that between 2012 and 2025, “Capitán Sol” spent over 60 million pesos on luxury items, casinos, and real estate, despite being a retired member of the Mexican Navy since 2018.
Documented expenditures include a 428,500-peso purchase at Tiffany & Co., over 6 million pesos in credit card payments, and approximately 52 million pesos in casino gambling, 99.3 percent of which was conducted in cash. The FGR noted that these financial patterns are consistent with money laundering techniques. His assets include 12 properties located in Veracruz, Mexico City, and Sinaloa, as well as a penthouse in Tulum.
The FGR identifies “Capitán Sol” as a key figure in a network allegedly operating within the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar). The investigation suggests the network was led by Manuel and Fernando Farías Laguna. Following the investigation, arrest warrants were issued for 13 individuals, including the Farías Laguna brothers and “Capitán Sol,” who was detained in October.
