Claudia Sheinbaum launches CFE González Ortega plant, aims for 60% electricity generation

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum inaugurated the 653‑megawatt González Ortega combined‑cycle plant of the state utility CFE in Mexicali, Baja California. The project, costing about $704 million, is expected to generate 5,169 GWh annually and reduce carbon emissions by roughly 3 million tonnes.

Sheinbaum said the new plant is part of a broader strategy to add 32 GW of capacity before 2030, with 22 GW to come from renewable sources, and to raise CFE’s share of national electricity generation from 54 % to 60 %. The administration also announced the replacement of 4,000 aging distribution poles in Baja California to improve service reliability.

The move underscores the government’s emphasis on energy sovereignty, environmental sustainability and social justice, positioning CFE as the central player in Mexico’s power sector for the remainder of the current six‑year term.
