Mexico's CFE launches new power projects in Los Cabos and Manzanillo

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) of Mexico placed a 75 MVA transformer into service at the Los Cabos Turbogas Substation on 5 July 2026. The equipment, part of a transmission network expansion in the northwest, is expected to improve power quality and reliability for roughly 400 000 users in the rapidly growing tourist region of Baja California Sur.

CFE also brought the Manzanillo III combined‑cycle power plant into commercial operation on 17 April 2026 after successful testing. With a net capacity of about 346 MW, the plant uses natural‑gas‑fired turbines and seawater‑cooled systems, generating low‑emission electricity for the western and Bajío regions. The project created 1 070 jobs and serves more than 2 million consumers, reinforcing the national grid’s security.

Both projects were highlighted during an inauguration ceremony attended by President Claudia Sheinbaum and senior energy officials, underscoring the government’s push to strengthen Mexico’s electricity supply.
