Mexico's Comisión Permanente urges action against screwworm parasite
The Comisión Permanente has issued a formal request to the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) and the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica) to strengthen measures to prevent, monitor, and eradicate the screwworm parasite in livestock.
The parasite poses a significant zoosanitary risk with potential negative impacts on livestock production, cattle trade, and the economy of producers. The Comisión Permanente also urged the Ministry of Agriculture to enhance technical cooperation and coordination with authorities in the United States to manage the parasite.
According to Senasica data, there have been 33,698 accumulated cases in Mexico from the first detection on November 21, 2024, through July 15, 2025. Of these, 2,252 cases were reported as active, while 31,446 were inactive, representing animals that had successfully completed treatment.
