CRT approves new audience rights guidelines in Mexico

The Mexican Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) has approved new General Guidelines for the Protection of Audience Rights following a public consultation process. The guidelines aim to establish mechanisms for audiences to voice complaints and ensure media outlets respond to their viewers and listeners.

To address concerns regarding censorship and freedom of expression, the CRT modified several key provisions from the original proposal. The regulator will no longer intervene in content or decide what is true or false; instead, it will only act if a media outlet fails to follow established procedures for addressing audience grievances. Additionally, the requirement for media to avoid spreading “false or decontextualized information” was replaced with an obligation to preserve plurality and veracity according to their own editorial criteria and ethical codes.

President Claudia Sheinbaum and CRT President Norma Solano emphasized that the rules are not intended to censor media, but to ensure accountability. The National Chamber of the Radio and Television Industry (CIRT) expressed support for the guidelines, noting they balance regulation with editorial freedom. However, Human Rights Watch warned that certain aspects could still pose risks to independent journalism and freedom of expression.
