Mexico's Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard Launches T‑MEC Review Talks with US
Mexico’s economy secretary Marcelo Ebrard announced that formal negotiations to review the US‑Mexico‑Canada trade pact (T‑MEC) will begin on 27 May in Mexico and run through 29 May, with a follow‑up delegation travelling to Washington. The talks will cover a wide range of issues, including automotive rules of origin, tariffs on steel and aluminium, digital trade, intellectual‑property rights, labour standards, environmental regulations and the pharmaceutical supply chain, where both countries import over 80 % of active ingredients.
Ebrard said a fast‑track agreement is not expected and that the negotiations could extend beyond the 1 July deadline set for the review, stressing the need to avoid economic uncertainty. A U.S. commercial delegation is scheduled to visit, and bilateral talks with Canada will be added later, as the treaty remains in force until 2036.
