Mexico's Education Ministry Announces End of 2025‑26 School Year and Start of 2026‑27

The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) confirmed that the 2025‑2026 school year officially ended on 15 July 2026, affecting more than 1.6 million students across 16,000 schools nationwide. The ministry reported that 82,000 teachers will enter an intensive training period before the next cycle. SEP announced that the 2026‑2027 school year will begin for students on 31 August 2026, with teachers resuming duties a week earlier on 24 August.

Key programme highlights include the continuation of the “Becas para el Bienestar” scholarships, now covering 22 million beneficiaries, as well as the Rita Cetina, Benito Juárez and Jóvenes Escribiendo‑el‑Futuro scholarship reforms for 2026. The health‑oriented “Vive Saludable, Vive Feliz” initiative has digital health records for 10.8 million pupils. Infrastructure investments total about 59 billion MXN to improve secondary and bachillerato facilities.

Regional authorities are preparing for the new cycle: Jalisco opened an online portal for pre‑inscriptions, Quintana Roo parents are contesting the new “Mi Derecho, Mi Lugar” high‑school placement system, and Puebla reported that the cycle’s closure left 1.66 million students without classes. In Mexico City, traffic is expected to intensify on 15 July due to school‑related travel and the FIFA World Cup semifinal fan‑festival.

Overall, the SEP emphasized the goal of extending universal education, reducing dropout rates, and ensuring a smooth transition to the next academic year.
