Mexico's Election Reform Allows Nullifying Votes Over Foreign Interference

Mexico's Congress approved a reform that adds a constitutional ground for nullifying elections if foreign interference is proven. The change, published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación, references article 40 of the Constitution and could be applied to the 2027 presidential election. President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters that the Electoral Tribunal would interpret any alleged interference, saying, “Hoy está establecido esto ya en nuestra norma constitucional… podríamos considerar una nulidad si se acredita la intromisión del exterior.”

Senator Mario Vázquez (PAN) criticised the measure, calling it a “botón de pánico” that Morena might use to overturn unfavorable results. He warned that the reform diverts attention from the more pressing threat of organized‑crime involvement in elections, noting ongoing U.S. investigations into links between political actors and criminal groups in several Mexican states.
