Mexico's environment agency says Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day lacks approval

The Mexican Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) confirmed that the "Perfect Day" megaproject promoted by Royal Caribbean in Mahahual, Quintana Roo, does not yet have environmental authorization for its development, construction, or operation. Semarnat is conducting a comprehensive review of the project's Environmental Impact Statement, noting technical issues related to the projected infrastructure, mitigation measures, and potential effects on coastal mangroves, coral reefs, and karst aquifers. More than 14,000 public comments and technical inputs from communities, specialists, and NGOs, including Greenpeace, have been incorporated into the assessment.

Greenpeace activists staged a protest at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, warning that the project could damage mangroves, coral reefs, jaguar habitats and sea‑turtle nesting sites, and could trigger mass‑tourism pressures similar to other Caribbean destinations. Although a federal court recently dismissed an amparo filed by Mahahual residents, the decision does not equate to environmental approval, which remains pending with Semarnat. The proposed development aims to accommodate up to 21,000 visitors per day.
