Mexico's Environment and Tourism Secretariats Sign Sustainable Tourism Investment Decalogue

Mexico's secretaries of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and Tourism (SECTUR) signed a "Decálogo para la Inversión Turística Sustentable" on 24 July 2026. The agreement, signed by SEMARNAT head Alicia Bárcena and SECTUR chief Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, sets out principles to guide tourism projects toward economic growth, environmental protection and social inclusion. It targets a portfolio of 773 tourism investment projects worth more than US$42 billion, emphasizing sustainable governance, conservation of natural and cultural heritage, community‑based tourism, efficient water management, circular economy and climate action. Bárcena stressed that “nature is the infrastructure of tourism” and warned that “no tourist destination can survive the destruction of what made it attractive.” Rodríguez highlighted that “Mexico is in fashion,” and said the decalogue will provide certainty for investors while safeguarding ecosystems and local communities. The document seeks to move beyond a symbolic declaration by linking guidelines to concrete budget commitments and civil‑society participation.
