Mexico's ex‑president AMLO's US criticism sparks political backlash

Former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued a sharply worded statement from his retirement in Palenque, accusing the United States of an "embestida" and backing President Claudia Sheinbaum’s requests for extraditions. Morena legislators praised the remarks, saying AMLO’s voice carries moral stature and should be respected as part of democratic debate.

Priest‑party deputy Rubén Moreira condemned the letter as “meddlesome” and imprudent, arguing that a former leader should not intervene in Mexico’s foreign policy at a time of heightened bilateral tension. He warned that such actions could complicate relations with the United States, which are already strained over visa issues and trade negotiations.
