Mexico's Green Party advances municipal eco‑ordering reforms and pesticide penalties

Federal deputy Jesús Cuanalo Araujo of the Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM) presented a bill to amend the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection. The proposal would give municipalities the responsibility to create and update ecological ordering plans, aiming to better address deforestation, water contamination, soil degradation and climate‑related challenges across the country.

In the state of Veracruz, PVEM legislative group coordinator Carlos Marcelo Ruiz Sánchez announced that a new reform has been incorporated into state environmental law, making the use of 35 prohibited pesticides in crops punishable by fines and possible criminal prosecution. The measure targets illegal pesticide use that threatens aquifers and has been linked to recent fish die‑offs in the Papaloapan basin. The deputy also noted that the party has filed complaints with federal environmental agencies regarding a local alcohol plant implicated in water contamination.
