Mexico's IMSS upgrades with 42 advanced 256‑slice CT scanners

The Institute of Mexican Social Security (IMSS) has received 42 ultra‑high‑end computed‑tomography (CT) scanners, 41 of them 256‑slice models, for installation in 40 hospitals across 19 states. The devices, purchased for about 29 million pesos each, allow up to 50 studies per day and cut scan times from minutes to seconds, reducing waiting periods and eliminating the need for patient referrals to third‑level centers.

In Tijuana, the newly installed 256‑slice scanner at IMSS Clinic 1 is already performing around 50 examinations daily, enabling rapid diagnosis of heart, brain, cancer and trauma cases. The rollout is part of a broader health‑system renewal announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum, who linked the investment to correcting decades of neoliberal health policy. The same announcement highlighted the expansion of telemedicine to 859 ISSSTE units, improving remote specialist access nationwide.
