Mexico's IMSS adds hundreds of specialist doctors in Veracruz and Tamaulipas

The Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) formally incorporated 516 specialist physicians into its workforce in the state of Veracruz, aiming to reduce wait times and broaden high‑complexity care across the region. The new specialists cover fields such as general surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, obstetrics‑gynecology, anesthesiology and emergency medicine, and will be distributed between Veracruz North and South to serve rural and semi‑urban communities.

Earlier in March, the IMSS hired an additional 399 specialist doctors nationwide, a move highlighted as a major step toward correcting historic shortages in states like Tamaulipas, where coverage now approaches 80 % of the population. The recruitment effort is credited to coordinated actions among federal, state and IMSS officials, including the state delegation in Tamaulipas led by José Luis Aranza Aguilar and union representatives such as Jorge González.
