Mexico's IMSS launches voluntary scheme for self‑employed, opens funeral services to all

The Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) has introduced a voluntary incorporation program that lets independent workers—such as entrepreneurs, freelancers, artisans, content creators, delivery drivers and online sellers—register for social security without an employer. Enrolled individuals gain access to medical care, hospitalisation, maternity services, disability and retirement benefits, and can also contribute toward an Infonavit mortgage credit.

IMSS also offers funeral services that any person can contract, regardless of IMSS affiliation. The services, available 24 hours a day at 18 facilities in 15 Mexican states, include chapel or home vigils, cremation, transfers, embalming and legal assistance. To hire a service, the client must present a death certificate and official ID, select a package and pay the applicable fee. This funeral offering is distinct from the separate financial assistance available to families of insured or retired members.
