Mexico's IMSS reports 22.7 million formal jobs and record daily salary in May 2026

The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) recorded 22,718,681 formal jobs at the end of May 2026, the fifth‑highest total since the agency began reporting and the highest ever for a May. Permanent positions made up 86.8% of the jobs. The month saw a dip of 29,922 jobs (‑0.1%) attributed to seasonal completion of agricultural cycles and the cancellation of a fraudulent employer registration. Excluding that effect, employment would have continued to rise.

Year‑over‑year, formal employment grew by 346,637 jobs, a 1.5% increase, bringing the 2026 total to 201,605 new jobs so far. The average base contribution salary reached 671.3 pesos per day, the highest recorded for any month, up 6.6% from the previous year.

State‑level data showed Puebla losing 1,512 positions and ranking 19th in job creation, while Querétaro posted a 1.2% annual increase, driven by its industrial and service sectors, keeping it among the top regions for formal employment growth.
