Mexico's IMSS warns of social security fraud schemes

IMSS director general Zoé Robledo warned that false advertisements on social‑media platforms are offering low‑cost (200‑650 pesos) registrations to the Institute of Mexican Social Security. The ads promote third‑party intermediaries and pyramid‑type schemes that promise reduced payments if more people are recruited.

The Institute says such irregular registrations are cancelled, leaving victims without health coverage and potentially exposing them to criminal liability. IMSS has asked digital platforms to remove the deceptive posts and announced an informational campaign to alert the public. During a press conference with President Claudia Sheinbaum at the Palacio Nacional, Robledo highlighted the legal alternative for self‑employed workers: the Independent Worker model, which already counts about half a million affiliates.

IMSS emphasizes that legitimate affiliation can be completed online through its official portal, requiring only standard personal and employment information.
