Mexico's INE marks 71st anniversary of women's suffrage

The National Electoral Institute (INE) marked July 3, 2026 as the 71st anniversary of the first time Mexican women voted in a federal election, a historic event that took place on 3 July 1955 and led to the election of the first female deputy to the Congress of the Union. The institute described the milestone as a turning point that deepened democratic legitimacy and representation.

INE said the commemoration also serves as a reminder to ensure that women can participate in politics under conditions of safety and equality. It highlighted ongoing measures to prevent political violence against women, strengthen female leadership, provide technical training for party structures and move beyond gender‑quota compliance toward substantive gender equality in public office.
