Overview
In June 2026 the National Electoral Institute (INE) issued a redesigned Credencial para Votar with 25 anti‑fraud features, a mobile QR reader and optional gender‑identity markers; both resident and expatriate versions were released while existing cards remained valid. On 3 July 2026 INE marked the 71st anniversary of women’s suffrage, recalling the 1955 election that first enfranchised women and reaffirming its commitment to protect women’s political participation, curb violence and advance substantive gender equality beyond quotas. A week later it piloted a real‑time biometric verification system in Coahuila, cross‑checking facial photos and up to ten fingerprints stored in the electoral register, eliminating 4,266 duplicate entries recorded between June 2024 and June 2026; about 94 % of voters now have ten fingerprints, the rest two, with data kept solely by INE. The platform is intended to support internet voting, mail‑in ballots, candidacy registration and party‑affiliation processes, extending anti‑fraud safeguards across digital services, and was likened to Spain’s e‑government certificate system. On 15 July 2026 INE in Veracruz required a CURP marked “verified by the Civil Registry” for voter‑credential applications, alongside a birth certificate, proof of address and photographic ID or two local witnesses. Service modules, including Plaza Comercial Los Pinos, extended hours (08:00‑20:00 weekdays, 08:00‑15:00 Saturday). While the institute targets a nine‑day processing time, the average remains 17‑20 business days due to printer‑line upgrades. The credential continues to offer optional gender‑identity and indigenous‑identity selections. By late July 2026 INE normalised voter‑credential production, printing over 2.4 million cards and clearing a backlog of 423,109 units by raising daily output to 90,000 on 10 June. Approximately 2.01 million cards were stocked nationwide, aiming to restore a six‑to‑nine‑day delivery window.
