Mexico's ISSSTE provides organ donations and knee‑replacement surgeries to dozens of patients

The Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE) oversaw two organ‑donation procedures at its General Hospital in Querétaro. Families of two women, aged 60 and 75, donated corneas that were transplanted to recipients at the Hospital Regional “Lic. Adolfo López Mateos” in Mexico City, and musculoskeletal tissue that was supplied to the institute’s tissue bank for distribution to other hospitals. A family member said, “Nuestra madre fue un extraordinario ser humano… Dio vida.”

In a separate effort, ISSSTE carried out a six‑day orthopaedic campaign at the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad in Torreón, performing total knee‑replacement surgeries on 40 patients from Coahuila, Durango and Tamaulipas. Director Margarita Martínez Moreno reported that the patients, aged 55‑80, recovered well and regained the ability to walk without pain, noting, “Los pacientes se recuperaron favorablemente y, luego de completar de uno a dos días de hospitalización, fueron dados de alta.” These initiatives form part of ISSSTE’s strategy to improve specialist medical care and promote organ‑donation awareness across Mexico.
