Mexico 2026 Survey Shows Rising Unemployment and Informality

The June 2026 National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE) recorded an economically active population of 61.9 million people. The number of employed fell by about 84 000, while the unemployed rose by roughly 132 000, pushing the open‑unemployment rate up from 2.7 % to 2.9 %. Labor‑force participation declined from 59.8 % to 58.8 %, and the non‑economically active population grew to 43.3 million. Informal employment reached 55 % of all workers, meaning 33.1 million people work in vulnerable conditions. Sectoral distribution was 64.5 % in services (≈38.8 million), 10.7 % in primary activities (≈6.4 million), 24.0 % in industry and construction (≈14.4 million), with the remainder in unspecified categories.

A separate report emphasizes that the same ENOE figures yield a 97.1 % employment rate, positioning Mexico at the top of the G‑20 list and ahead of economies such as the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United States. The report credits this high rate with helping reduce labor‑related poverty and socioeconomic inequality in 2026.
