Mexico's leaders warn of risks after AMLO's letter to Trump

Former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) published a letter addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he criticized recent U.S. policies toward Mexico and warned against labeling Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations. The letter sparked a wave of reactions within Mexico.

Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri called for caution during the ongoing USMCA renegotiations, emphasizing the treaty’s importance for the state’s trade with the United States and urging unity against criminal groups rather than political polarization.

PRI national leader Alejandro Alito Moreno responded with a vehement attack, calling AMLO a “narcopresident” and saying the former president “will end up in jail.” He accused AMLO of colluding with drug cartels, weakening institutions, and endangering Mexico‑U.S. relations. Other opposition politicians and business figures joined the criticism, arguing the letter could complicate the trade talks and bilateral ties.
