Mexico's SEMARNAT blocks Royal Caribbean's $1 bn Perfect Day water‑park in Mahahual

Royal Caribbean International’s proposed $800 million‑$1 billion “Perfect Day Mexico” resort in Mahahual, Quintana Roo, was denied environmental approval by Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). The mega‑water‑park, slated to open in 2027, would have covered about 90 hectares, featured more than 30 waterslides, a 9,200 m² pool and capacity for up to 20,000 visitors per day, and was promoted as a private cruise destination. Environmental groups, local residents and a Change.org petition that gathered over 4 million signatures warned that the development would threaten mangroves, the Mesoamerican Reef and endangered marine species. SEMARNAT secretary Alicia Bárcena said, “It is not going to be approved,” echoing President Claudia Sheinbaum’s warning not to endanger the area’s ecological balance. Royal Caribbean issued a statement expressing disappointment but respecting the decision, pledging to re‑engage with stakeholders and explore alternatives that protect the environment and create local jobs.
