Mexico's Morena party debates re‑election rules ahead of 2027 elections

Morena legislators say the possibility of local mayors and deputies seeking consecutive re‑election will depend on a formal party call, as the Constitution already bans such re‑election until 2030. Deputy Francisco Vázquez Rodríguez stressed that the party will respect the upcoming call and wait for the timeline before deciding any candidacies for the 2027 electoral cycle.

Senator Manuel Huerta Ladrón de Guevara urged the Green Party to block any attempts at nepotism or immediate re‑election, insisting the newly approved constitutional reform – which bars consecutive re‑election and curbs electoral nepotism – must be applied without exceptions. He cited recent cases in Veracruz where relatives sought office, and noted that Morena intends to enforce the reform from 2027 onward, even though it will become generally effective in 2030.
