Mexico's Morena Party Launches Candidate Selection Process Ahead of 2027 Elections

On 22 June, Mexico's ruling Morena party opened the internal registration of aspirants for its State Coordinations of Defense of the Transformation, the first step in selecting candidates for the 17 gubernatorial contests scheduled for 2027. The selection will be based on party‑wide surveys, a method the party argues improves transparency and broadens participation. The process is governed by strict rules prohibiting the use of public resources, nepotism, and links to criminal groups, with background checks conducted by the attorney‑general's office and other authorities.

At the same time, the National Electoral Institute (INE) is set to decide by 25 June which new political formations meet the requirements for official registration. Among the prospective registrants is the Flores Cervantes‑led PES, a party described by critics as a vehicle for a family‑controlled political network. If approved, the party would join the expanding field of groups contesting future elections, further shaping the internal dynamics of Mexico's political landscape.
