Morena registers 277 candidates for 2027 state coordination race

Morena’s internal process for selecting coordinators of the State Defense of the Transformation and National Sovereignty – the pipeline for the party’s 2027 gubernatorial candidates – closed its first registration phase with 277 aspirants across the country. Registrations were accepted both in person (123) and online (154) for the 17 governorships up for election. The party will now verify eligibility, enforce new filters to block candidates with criminal records, debt, gender‑based violence allegations or close family ties to current governors, and will later narrow each state’s list to six profiles (three men, three women) for a September internal poll.

A wave of resignations accompanied the launch: 53 federal and state legislators and 16 incumbent mayors left their posts to seek a coordination, as required by Morena’s rules. The party also announced that a circulated list claiming to set gender quotas was fake, with Citlalli Hernández, head of the party’s National Elections Commission, warning supporters to rely only on official communications.

Individual candidacies highlighted include Raúl Morón Orozco, the sole aspirant backed by both Morena and the Labor Party (PT) in Michoacán, and several other figures such as Gaby Molina, Gladys Butanda and Ana Paty Peralta who are touring their states as part of the territorial outreach. The party reiterated that coalition talks for 2027 will wait until internal selections are finished, with national leader Citlalli Hernández set to define coalition frameworks in each state.
