Mexico's National Guard adopts Chihuahua dog for community outreach

The Mexican National Guard has integrated a small Chihuahua, known as 'Comando Chihuahua', into its ranks to serve as a social proximity ambassador. Standing only 20 centimeters tall, the dog is used to build trust between security forces and the public by attending schools, public plazas, and community activities.

Comando Chihuahua was donated to the institution six months ago by an elderly couple from the state of Chihuahua who could no longer manage the animal's high energy levels. The dog gained significant public visibility following its appearance in official attire during the military parade on September 16 in Mexico City.

While the Mexican Secretariat of National Defense and the National Guard maintain a large canine contingent of approximately 1,300 dogs—primarily German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois trained for narcotics and explosives detection—Comando is the only representative of his breed. Due to his small size, authorities have constructed a specialized training track at the Military Field in Mexico City to accommodate his needs.
