Mexican National Guard canine outreach program

Overview

The Mexican National Guard has integrated a small Chihuahua named Comando into its ranks to serve as a social proximity ambassador. Adopted from an elderly couple in the state of Chihuahua, the dog is used to build trust between security forces and the public by attending schools, civic ceremonies, and community activities.

While the National Guard maintains a large canine contingent of approximately 1,300 dogs—mostly German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois trained for narcotics and explosives detection—Comando is the only representative of his breed. To support his unique needs, authorities have constructed a specialized training track at the Military Field in Mexico City. In addition to his social role, Comando has undergone training for search and rescue operations and is frequently seen in custom tactical gear.
