Mexico's Oaxaca Legislature Approves Administrative Upgrades and Community Renaming

During its ordinary session on 14 July, the LXVI Legislature of Oaxaca unanimously approved five resolutions from the Permanent Commission of Government and Agrarian Affairs. The measures grant the status of police agency to San Isidro El Rosario (municipality of Santa María del Rosario) and to El Carrizal (municipality of San Andrés Paxtlán) and to Vergel del Maíz (municipality of San Francisco del Mar). They also elevate Buenavista Totohi (municipality of San Esteban Atatlahuca) to a municipal agency. In addition, the legislature approved the renaming of the community formerly known as Mena to Mena Nizanda in the municipality of Asunción Ixtaltepec, citing indigenous peoples’ right to self‑determination. The resolutions will be formally notified to the state secretariats of Government and Finance as required by law.
