Mexico hits historic electricity demand of 54,300 MW
Mexico's national grid registered a new peak demand of 54,300 megawatts (MW) at 20:22 on Thursday, surpassing the previous record set on 21 June 2023. The surge was driven primarily by expanding industrial activity, the rapid growth of data centers, nearshoring and broader digitalisation, according to Juan Francisco Cuevas Villagómez, director of Engineering and Infrastructure Projects at the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE).
CFE notes that the country’s installed generation capacity totals 93,402 MW—almost double the observed peak—indicating that the system can technically meet demand. However, modern industrial sites now require 200‑300 MW each, up to 30 times the 10‑20 MW historically needed, placing new stress on the network. Cuevas Villagómez emphasized that occasional outages are linked to rapid fluctuations caused by these large consumers, not to a shortage of generation capacity.
The record underscores the shifting drivers of electricity use in Mexico, moving away from population growth toward high‑intensity industrial and digital consumption.
