Former U.S. ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar’s forthcoming memoir alleges that ex‑president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) was “very concerned” that U.S. prosecutors would obtain information from the 2024 arrest of Sinaloa cartel co‑founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. The book, titled *Borderlands: My Fight for an Inclusive America* in English and *Las Fronteras: Mi Lucha por un EE. UU. incluyente* in Spanish, includes over 100 pages about Salazar’s ambassadorship and a “whisperer” source who supposedly relayed the president’s worries.

Mexico’s current president, Claudia Sheinbaum, dismissed the allegations, stating that the published excerpts are only fragments and that AMLO never feared Zambada’s testimony. She emphasized Mexico’s sovereignty and called for patience until the full book is released. Sheinbaum also noted that the investigation into Zambada’s July 2024 capture near El Paso remains open and that Mexico continues to coordinate with U.S. authorities.
